The Ultimate Saint Thomas Travel Guide

Saint Thomas, a gem in the U.S. Virgin Islands is the perfect place to get your sun, sand and snorkelling fix. With its vibrant Caribbean culture and stunning beaches with crystal clear waters, St. Thomas is a destination that should be on everyone's travel bucket list. St. Thomas has a warm, tropical climate year-round, making it the perfect destination for a trip away from the class-room or office in any season. With a mix of African, European and Caribbean influences, the island is rich in culture and history. From vibrant festivals, lively music and colourful colonial architecture Saint Thomas is an ideal destination with something for everyone to explore and discover!

What to Expect in Saint Thomas

Language: English (but you'll also hear local slag and Creole influences adding to the island's cultural experience.)

Currency: U.S dollar (USD)

Credit Cards and Banks: Most businesses accept major credit cards, however I always recommend travelling with cash on hand for the smaller vendors and tips.

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Saint Thomas is between December and April. During these months, the weather is dry, with low humidity, plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures ranging between 73ºF (23ºC) and 85ºF (29ºC). These months avoid hurricane season and offers ideal conditions for beach activities, sightseeing and festivals.

Getting Around in Saint Thomas

Walking: In St. Thomas, walking anywhere is simply not an option. The roads and hills are very steep and winding nor do they have sidewalks, so its not safe for pedestrians.

Renting a Car: This is the best option to get around St. Thomas. I recommend renting it for at least a day or two, if not for your entire vacation to maximize your experience and visit all of the beaches, hikes and have the freedom to explore where you want and on your own time.

BUT: Do not forget they drive on the LEFT side of the road on the island!

Taxi: Taxis in St.Thomas are safe, but most are cash only. They also charge by the person. The rates are regulated, however make sure to agree on a rate prior to getting into the taxi to avoid confusion.

Public Transit: The VITRAN system is available on St. Thomas, however the timing on the schedule is minimal with few stops around the island. So planning you day strategically is required.
